GEI Career Pathway Experience for Interns

Your Journey with GEI Starts Here

At GEI Canada, an internship is more than a short-term placement – it’s the start of a long-term career pathway. GEI has a strong track record of hiring and rehiring interns, with many returning for multiple work terms and ultimately transitioning into full-time roles. For 2025, GEI has extended advance offers to more than 20 interns and early-career professionals across upcoming co-op and full-time opportunities.

A key differentiator at GEI is our forward-looking approach to talent development. High-performing interns are often considered for advance offer letters, whether for an upcoming co-op term or a future full-time role. This approach provides clarity, continuity, and a smooth transition from academic life into a professional career.

GEI also offers select rotation-based learning opportunities, where interns are placed within a primary practice area and may gain exposure to additional teams based on business needs, individual interests, and performance. This approach helps interns broaden their understanding of GEI’s work and build confidence as they explore future career pathways.

Between work terms, interns remain connected through mentorship, networking sessions, and opportunities to represent GEI as University Ambassadors at campus events and career fairs.

With offices in Barrie, Markham, Guelph, Vaughan, Hamilton, London, Listowel, Owen Sound, Kitchener, Abbotsford, Coquitlam, Victoria, Halifax and Fredericton, GEI provides meaningful career opportunities across Canada.

At GEI, we don’t simply offer internships – we invest in future professionals and create meaningful pathways for growth and long-term success.

From Intern to Fulltime Employee – Meet Caileigh Burgess

“My experience transitioning from an intern to a full-time Climate Change Analyst at GEI has been incredibly positive and supportive. I joined GEI as a summer intern while completing my Master of Environmental Science at the University of Toronto, and from the start, I was given opportunities to contribute to real project work and build practical skills that aligned with my interests in climate change, risk management and adaptation planning.

Throughout my internship, I had the opportunity to work directly on real client projects, learn GEI’s internal processes, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the company. Outside of the technical work, I also got involved in GEI’s social culture by joining the company softball team. It was a fun, inclusive, and welcoming environment that gave me the chance to build connections with staff from different offices and disciplines. As I moved closer to the end of my internship and began preparing for a full-time role, I joined GEI’s mentorship program as a mentee. Having a dedicated mentor during that transition was incredibly valuable in providing guidance, career advice, and support that helped me step confidently into a permanent position.

GEI maintained open communication throughout my final months, clearly outlining future opportunities and the steps for advancing into a full-time role. When I received the full-time offer, it felt like a natural extension of the work I had already been doing and a reflection of the company’s commitment to developing early-career talent. This pathway gave me a smooth and supported transition into my career, and I’m grateful for how much I was able to learn and contribute as an intern. I would highly recommend this program to any student or early-career professional who wants hands-on experience, mentorship, and a clear route into meaningful work in consulting.”
