10th Street Bridge Replacement

Bridge design through the heart of Owen Sound

Client

    City of Owen Sound

Location

    Owen Sound, ON

Key Elements

    Bridge Structure Design
  • Stakeholder Coordination

The City of Owen Sound retained GEI in 2019 to complete the replacement of the 10th Street Bridge, a critical crossing in the heart of the city that connects several provincial highways, county roads, and the federally owned harbour area.

GEI’s scope of work included the initial structural review, completion of a Schedule ‘C’ Environmental Assessment (EA), detailed design and tendering, as well as contract administration and construction review. The assessment confirmed the need for full bridge replacement due to the age and condition of the existing structure.

The new bridge was designed as a single-span concrete slab on CPCI girders, featuring integral abutments and steel pile foundations to improve durability and reduce long-term maintenance. The project required extensive coordination with municipal, county, provincial, and federal agencies, given the bridge’s strategic location and importance to regional transportation.

Project Highlights

  • Completed Schedule ‘C’ EA, design, and construction administration for full bridge replacement.
  • Coordinated with multiple levels of government and adjacent private landowners.
  • Implemented a vibration monitoring program to protect nearby structures during construction.
  • Managed integration of sewer and watermain upgrades within the project area.
  • Delivered tender drawings ahead of schedule, with construction completed in December 2020.

The new 10th Street Bridge provides a safe, modern, and efficient transportation corridor through downtown Owen Sound, improving connectivity and supporting the city’s long-term infrastructure renewal goals.
